How to get your certificado de empadronamiento in Madrid ?

When you arrive in Madrid, and in Spain as a whole, you must register with the municipal Padron. What is this administrative formality? This article explains everything you need to know about the certificado de empadronamiento in Madrid, and how to obtain it.

What is the empadronamiento in Madrid and what is its purpose?

The Padron municipal is a compulsory document that all residents of Spain must submit to their local council. It is an entry in the municipal register for your place of residence. The Padron municipal must be completed for the whole family living under the same roof (main residence).

Unemancipated minors and disabled elderly people must be registered at the home of the parents who have custody of them, or the legal representatives, unless written authorisation states otherwise.

You will need a Padron municipal to carry out other administrative formalities. We recommend that you complete this Spanish administrative formality first.

You’ll need it later to register your NIE, enrol your children at school or in municipal sports centres, etc.

This document is free. You don’t have to pay for it. It is issued in person on the same day if the application is complete.

Where should you go to make your empadronamiento in Madrid?

To apply for a Padron municipal, you must go to the relevant department of your local council.

If you live in Madrid, you can make an appointment online.

What documents do I need to present?

Before going to your appointment, you need to prepare your file.

If you are a resident of the European Union, here are the documents you need to bring with you:

Original identity document + photocopy for all persons to be registered

Fill in the official Padron municipal application form, signed by all persons to be registered.

For children under 14: family record book (original and copy) and identity document (original and copy)

Proof of address: rental contract, last telephone, water or internet bill, etc.

For information on specific cases, visit the official Madrid City Council website.

Validity date?

The municipal Padron is valid for 3 months. Renewable on request from the Town Hall.

How do you renew it?

Go to your local town hall and bring a current Padron, which has expired, and ask for it to be renewed. Bring your identity documents and a final bill just in case, but when I went there, they didn’t ask me for anything.

When should it be done?

As I said earlier, we advise you to register your Padron as soon as you have signed a rental contract. It’s the 1st formality you need to complete before you can carry out the other administrative formalities, such as registering with local schools, sports centres, etc.
